The trend in modern vehicle manufacturing over recent years has seen the introduction of smaller capacity, higher output engines that deliver lower fuel economy and emissions over previous generation engines. To go with these changes, the industry has also developed newer, higher performance engine lubricants that meet the specification requirements of the manufactures and address issues such as -
Industry bodies such as the API (American Petroleum Institute) and ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europeens de l’Automobile) saw the need for aftertreatment compatible specifications to cover newer low viscosity engine oils such as 5W-20 and 0W-20. In 2016, ACEA introduced a new specification to its MID SAPS catalyst compatible sequence with the introduction of a C5 variant. This specification was designed for use in high performance petrol and light duty diesel engines where advanced aftertreatment systems such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs), Gasoline Particle Filters (GPFs) and Three-Way Catalysts (TWC) are used. The new C5 specification had the same SAPS levels as ACEA C2 and ACEA C3 but with a lower HTHS viscosity between 2.6 and 2.9 mPa’s. This new specification improved fuel economy by 2% over a typical C3 product.
In 2021, ACEA also introduced a C6 specification Mid SAPS level, engine oil for improved fuel economy, for aftertreatment system compatibility. Intended for use at extended oil drain intervals in passenger car and light-duty gasoline & DI (Direct Injection) diesel engines designed and OEM-approved for engine oils with HTHS viscosity of minimum 2.6 mPas. Relative to C5 these engine oils also provide low speed pre-ignition and wear protection for turbocharged gasoline DI engines as well as turbocharger compressor deposit (TCCD) protection for modern DI diesel engines.
Penrite seeing the need for this specification in the Aftermarket, introduced Enviro+ C5 0W-20 variant to its range to satisfy requirements for manufacturers such as BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo. Not happy to rest on its laurels, Penrite have since updated Enviro+ C5 0W-20 to now meet API SP Resource Conserving. ILSAC GF-6A and the new ACEA C6 specifications. It is also API licensed ensuring quality and satisfaction.
Recently this specification is now the choice of Toyota for its Turbo Diesel Hilux, Land Cruiser Prado and Fortuner models manufactured from the 5/2020. This also the only specification requirement for these vehicles.
