"If I kept all the parts I've left out of cars I could build one"

So there we were, each leaning awkwardly into either side of this car putting a dashboard back in when my colleauge turns to me and says;

"You know what, If I had kept all the parts I've left out of cars over the years I reckon I could build one"

Now, this guy is absolutey meticulous and would lose sleep over a nut or bolt without a home. I know this, but can you imagine what a customer would think if they heard you say something like that?

This could spell the destruction of a workshops reputation and possibly your career as a techincian.

But that couldn't happen, because we all know how much customers pay attention to the big signs that say "WORKSHOP, DO NOT ENTER" - Yeh right!

Aside from the customer that lingers over your shoulder, we need to be mindful of these things...

dashcams

Dash Cams, Crash Cams, Drive Recorders...Call them what you will.

They are a great little invention we are seeing pop up more and more in vehicles these days but keep in mind that when you are working on a vehicle with a dash cam fitted, big brother is watching! ...or at least could be.

Why are we saying this?

Because we think some of us are dodgy mechanics or abuse customers vehicles?

No, well at least we certainly hope not!

We are saying this because it's not uncommon to hear a crass joke or 'F bomb' dropped on the odd occasion (or every minute in some shops)

Does this reflect on the experience of the technician?

Does this affect the standard of work delivered?

Does this affect the effectivness or safety of a repair?

No, no and no.

It's just the way of the shop floor. Just be mindful of the domino effect this could have if it fell on the wrong ears.

So next time you are working on a car with a dash cam fitted = unplug it or turn it off.

You have the right to your privacy and this ensures there are no misinterpretations by "curious customers"

Just make sure it is plugged back in and switched on when the customer takes delivery of the vehicle.
